What GCSEs can you take?

The national menu of GCSE subjects is huge; your school's menu is smaller. Understanding both stops you assuming a subject is 'unavailable' when it is simply not in this year's blocks.
Common optional GCSEs
- โ Humanities: history, geography, religious studies
- โ Languages: French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Urdu, Mandarin (availability varies)
- โ Arts: art, music, drama, media, design technology
- โ Social sciences: business, sociology, psychology (some schools)
- โ Computing: computer science vs IT โ different courses
- โ Sciences: combined trilogy vs separate biology, chemistry, physics
Subjects people search for but schools rarely run
Astronomy, electronics, geology and some community languages appear in search data but are niche. If your child needs one, ask about external centres or whether a related subject (physics, computer science) covers the pathway better.
Choosing with tutoring in mind
Pick subjects the student can sustain for two years. If a stretch subject is strategically important, budget tutoring from the start of Year 10 rather than panicking in Year 11 mocks.
FAQs
Can you take GCSE Arabic or Urdu?๏ผ
Yes at many schools with community language provision, and sometimes via Saturday centres. Confirm exam board and speaking assessment arrangements early.
Is triple science always better?๏ผ
It keeps science A-Levels easier to access, but combined science is fine for many pathways. The decision should follow attainment and timetable load, not prestige alone.
