GCSE Science tutors who make it click
Science GCSEs reward students who can explain, calculate and apply, not just memorise. Our tutors teach the 'why' with everyday examples, then lock it in with board-specific past papers.

Combined or triple science: what your child sits
Most students take Combined Science, a double award worth two GCSEs and graded on a 17-step scale from 9-9 down to 1-1. With AQA (Trilogy, 8464) that means six papers of 1 hour 15 minutes, two each in biology, chemistry and physics, each worth 70 marks. Pearson Edexcel and OCR use six shorter papers of 1 hour 10 minutes.
Triple (separate) science gives three GCSEs. With AQA, each science is examined by two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 100 marks each. There is more content, but each subject earns its own grade, which matters for students heading towards science A-Levels.
Required practicals and the maths inside science
Every board sets required practicals (AQA lists 21 for Combined Science and 28 across the three separate sciences), and at least 15% of the exam marks test the practical skills behind them. Students who only watched a practical in class tend to struggle with questions about variables, method and sources of error.
Maths is the other hidden filter. Each science has a minimum share of marks for maths skills: at least 10% in biology, 20% in chemistry and 30% in physics. Students now get an equation sheet in physics and combined science, but they still have to choose the right equation, rearrange it and convert the units.
Where science marks are lost
The same five problems account for most of the marks we see students drop on mock papers:
- โ Six-mark extended answers that list facts without linking cause and effect
- โ Calculations: rearranging equations, standard form and significant figures
- โ Required practical questions on variables, controls and improving accuracy
- โ Vague wording, when mark schemes reward the exact scientific term
- โ Graph and data questions that need a careful reading rather than a guess
GCSE Science exams at AQA
| Qualification (specification) | Papers | Length | Marks | Grades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) | 6 (2 per science) | 1h 15m each | 70 each | 9-9 to 1-1 (double award) |
| Biology (8461) | 2 | 1h 45m each | 100 each | 9-1 |
| Chemistry (8462) | 2 | 1h 45m each | 100 each | 9-1 |
| Physics (8463) | 2 | 1h 45m each | 100 each | 9-1 |
Pearson Edexcel and OCR combined science use six papers of 1h 10m. Every science paper is set at Foundation or Higher tier.
A 10-week plan before science mocks
- 1
Week 1: diagnostic
A past paper in each science to see which one is pulling the overall grade down.
- 2
Weeks 2-3: required practicals
Every practical on your board's list: method, variables, results tables and the questions examiners ask about them.
- 3
Weeks 4-5: science maths
Equations, rearranging, units and graph skills, drilled until they are quick.
- 4
Weeks 6-8: weakest topics
The two or three topics losing the most marks, taught with board-style questions and 6-mark answer structures.
- 5
Weeks 9-10: timed papers
Full papers under exam timing in the weakest science first, then the others.

Common questions
Combined or triple science, can you help with both?๏ผ
Yes. Tell us which your school runs and the exam board; tutors plan sessions around the exact specification content your child is tested on.
Physics is the problem, can we focus there?๏ผ
Absolutely. Most science students need one paper rescued, not three. We'll build a physics-first plan and keep the others ticking over.
How many required practicals are there?๏ผ
It depends on the board and route. At AQA there are 21 for Combined Science and 28 across separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Your child's school will have the list for their specification.
Is an equation sheet given in GCSE physics?๏ผ
Yes. Students sitting GCSE physics and combined science from 2025 receive an equation sheet. They still need to pick the right equation, rearrange it and handle units, which is where most physics marks are lost.
Does triple science help with A-Level sciences?๏ผ
It helps, because separate sciences cover more of the content A-Levels build on. Students from Combined Science can still do well at A-Level, but usually need to close some gaps early in Year 12.
How many GCSE science papers will my child sit?๏ผ
Combined science means six short papers (two each for biology, chemistry and physics). Triple science also means six papers, but they count as three separate GCSEs, so each paper carries more grade weight.
Do you help with required practicals?๏ผ
Yes, method, variables, and graph skills that exams repeatedly test.
