What does a GCSE tutor cost?

5 min read · updated 2026-08-31

GCSE tutoring is usually billed weekly, so the real question is the monthly cost. Here is what parents pay across maths, English and science, how many sessions make sense, and a transparent alternative.

Typical GCSE tutoring rates

Most UK GCSE tuition runs £20-35 per hour one-to-one, with exam-season specialists at the top of that range. Over a school year of weekly sessions, that is £800-1,400 per subject, which is why families increasingly compare monthly packages instead of hourly rates.

How many sessions does a GCSE student need?

One focused 60-minute session per week is the standard, with the student doing questions between sessions. Bumping to two weekly sessions helps most in the final term before exams or for resits; beyond that, returns diminish unless mocks show a specific gap.

Subject-by-subject notes

  • ✓ Maths: the most requested subject; marks come from method, so weekly past-paper drills pay off fastest
  • ✓ English: needs marking-heavy support (essays and comprehension), so check the tutor marks against exam criteria
  • ✓ Science: combined or triple, matched to your board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), with required practicals covered explicitly

EagleTeach GCSE pricing

From £16 a class (£20 for GCSE years) for weekly one-to-one sessions with a degree-qualified, board-matched tutor, weekly parent updates, and two free demo classes before you pay anything. Two weekly sessions (the exam-season push) still costs less than most single local lessons at premium rates.

FAQs

Is one session a week enough to move a GCSE grade?+

For most students yes, provided the sessions target weak topics and the student completes the set questions between lessons. Two sessions a week suit resits or students more than two grades off target.

Combined or triple science: does the price differ?+

Not with us. Sessions follow your school's specification either way; tell us the board and route when you book.
