How long are GCSE exams?

Exam length decides pacing: a student who runs out of time on a two-and-a-half-hour maths paper loses marks they knew. Here are the typical structures for the biggest subjects, and how to practise for them.
GCSE Maths
All three major boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) run three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each: one non-calculator and two calculator papers. The total is 4 hours 30 minutes of examined maths, which is why stamina and pacing drills belong in revision from spring onwards.
GCSE English
English Language is examined through two papers, each roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the board, testing reading and creative or transactional writing. English Literature adds further papers on set texts and poetry. Exact timings vary slightly by board, so confirm with your school's exam officer.
GCSE Science
Combined science runs six papers of around 1 hour 10 minutes each (two per science), while separate sciences (triple) use two longer papers per subject. Check your board for the exact durations, because combined and triple structures differ.
How to practise for paper length
Revise in the format you will be tested in: full-length timed papers, half-paper drills for weekly practice, and always with the same timing and calculators as the real thing. Pacing practice is why our GCSE programmes include weekly timed sections from spring, not just topic teaching.
FAQs
How long is GCSE maths paper 1?+
90 minutes (one and a half hours) at all three major boards - AQA, Edexcel and OCR - at both Foundation and Higher tier. Papers 2 and 3 are also 90 minutes each, giving four and a half hours of maths exams in total across the series. Paper 1 is the non-calculator paper, which is why arithmetic fluency features so heavily in resit and revision plans.
How many GCSE maths papers are there?+
Three, each 1 hour 30 minutes, with at least one taken without a calculator. All three boards follow this structure.
Which GCSE exam is longest?+
Single-subject papers like English Language run close to two hours per paper. Maths papers are a steady 1 hour 30 minutes each, but there are three of them, so the full sitting is the longest total commitment.
