How to get a 9 in GCSE Maths
7 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13
A 9 in GCSE Maths needs almost everything right: in June 2026 the grade 9 boundary on the Higher tier was 219 out of 240 with AQA (91%) and 208 out of 240 with Edexcel (87%). The difference between an 8 and a 9 is a handful of marks on the hardest questions and a few avoidable slips.
How the Higher tier works
Three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, each worth 80 marks: Paper 1 without a calculator, Papers 2 and 3 with one. On the Higher tier about 30% of marks test problem solving (choosing a method for an unfamiliar problem), 30% reasoning and communication, and 40% routine techniques.
The 2026 grade boundaries (Higher, out of 240)
- โ AQA (8300): grade 9 at 219, grade 8 at 192, grade 7 at 166
- โ Edexcel (1MA1): grade 9 at 208, grade 8 at 177, grade 7 at 146
The topics that separate 8 from 9
- โ Algebraic proof and 'show that' questions
- โ Functions: inverse and composite functions, and transformations of graphs
- โ Circle theorems with full reasons
- โ Vectors and geometric proof
- โ Iteration, rates of change and area under a curve
- โ Probability with algebra and conditional probability
Stop losing easy marks
At grade 9 level, marks are usually lost to slips, not gaps: misreading the question, rounding too early, or missing units. Write every step, keep full calculator values until the end and check each answer against the question.
A plan for the final 12 weeks
- โ Weeks 1-4: the hardest topics above, two per week, from past questions
- โ Weeks 5-8: one full paper a week, alternating calculator and non-calculator
- โ Weeks 9-12: the last questions of each paper (the hardest) and a slips checklist
Keep a mistakes log
After every past paper, write each lost mark in one of four columns. Patterns appear within three or four papers, and fixing the biggest column is the fastest route to the top grade.
- โ Knowledge: didn't know the fact, definition or method
- โ Method: knew it but set it out wrongly or skipped a step
- โ Reading: misread the question or answered a different one
- โ Slip: arithmetic, units, copying or rounding errors
Exam technique
- โ Do the last third of each paper earlier in your practice: it holds most of the grade 9 marks
- โ In the non-calculator paper, set out arithmetic clearly so method marks are safe
- โ Check that every answer is sensible (a probability over 1 or a negative length is a signal to recheck)
- โ Use spare time to redo, not just reread, the hardest questions
