Back to school: the two-week reset

5 min read · updated 2026-09-01

The first two weeks of a school year set its tone, and the families who ease children back into routines before term starts have calmer Septembers. This reset takes two weeks and prevents most of the wobble.

Week one: restart the rhythms

  • Move sleep and wake times back to term schedule, in 15-minute steps
  • Restart the reading habit before term does
  • Resurrect the homework desk: cleared, stocked, screen rules agreed
  • Talk through the term ahead: what they're looking forward to, what worries them

Week two: set the term's targets

With your child, agree two or three specific goals for the term (a maths topic, a reading habit, a subject they want to improve). Write them down where the child can see them. Specific, child-owned goals outperform parent-imposed ones.

The first-month plan

Front-load the calendar lightly: fewer activities in week one, homework routine from day one, and an early check-in with the child about how the workload feels. If a tutoring programme is planned, starting in week one or two builds momentum while the term is fresh.

FAQs

My child is anxious about the new year. What helps most?

Certainty and routine: walk the route, see the school if it's new, meet a friend before term, and keep home calm and predictable. Anxiety shrinks when the unknowns shrink.

Should tutoring start in September or wait?

Starting in the first weeks catches gaps early and sets the year's rhythm. Waiting until the first assessments often means starting from behind.
