What is the STAAR test?

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, STAAR for short, is Texas's statewide testing programme. It runs from grade 3 through high school, and at the high-school end it carries real stakes: five end-of-course exams must be passed to graduate.
Who takes what
In grades 3 to 8, students sit STAAR reading language arts and mathematics every year, with science added in grades 5 and 8 and social studies in grade 8. In high school, the programme switches to end-of-course (EOC) exams tied to specific classes: Algebra I, Biology, English I, English II and US History.
Those five EOCs matter for graduation: a student must reach the Approaches Grade Level standard or better on each to earn a diploma, with retake windows available. Most students take their EOCs in the spring alongside the course, which is why spring semester grades and EOC prep tend to rise and fall together.
How results are reported
STAAR performance is reported in four labels: Masters Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level, and Did Not Meet Grade Level. Approaches is the minimum pass for graduation purposes, Meets indicates readiness for the next grade's work, and Masters indicates advanced command. Results arrive with scale scores and percentile-style comparisons, and districts use them for course placement and support decisions alongside classroom grades.
How to prepare
Because STAAR is aligned to the Texas standards (TEKS), the best preparation is ordinary strong classroom work, plus familiarity with the online test platform and its built-in tools. For students below grade level in reading or maths, targeted catch-up on the specific gaps beats generic test prep: STAAR rewards the same reading stamina and multi-step problem solving that grades reward all year.
