What the 11+ maths paper tests
11+ maths is built on the Key Stage 2 curriculum, so nothing in it is beyond Year 6, but the questions are faster and wordier than school tests and often take two or three steps. The topics that come up again and again are mental arithmetic, fractions and percentages, ratio, simple algebra and sequences, angles, area and perimeter, time and units, and averages.
Each area sets its own test, and the exact mix differs. Check the familiarisation booklet your area or school publishes, and use practice like this to build speed and accuracy.
How to use this practice test
Sit it in one go, somewhere quiet, with paper for working. Afterwards, go through every wrong answer with the explanation before you try again: the topic breakdown shows where marks were lost.
Retaking the same questions will push the score up through memory alone, so treat the first attempt as the real result.
- ✓ Below about half: go back over the topic first, then practise questions untimed
- ✓ Most right but ran out of time: work on mental arithmetic speed and leave hard questions to the end
- ✓ Nearly full marks: move on to harder multi-step problems and full-length timed papers
FAQs
Is this an official 11+ paper?+
No. Every question was written by EagleTeach tutors to match the style of 11+ multiple-choice maths. GL Assessment publishes free familiarisation materials, and some areas publish their own, so use those alongside practice like this.
What score should my child aim for?+
This test isn't standardised, so the score shows which topics are secure, not whether your child would pass. Real 11+ results are given as standardised scores, and pass marks are set separately in each area.
Can you use a calculator in the 11+?+
No. 11+ maths papers are taken without a calculator, so this practice test doesn't offer one either.
When should my child start 11+ practice tests?+
Timed practice is most useful in Year 5, once the topics have been taught. Earlier on, untimed practice on one topic at a time builds the skills without the pressure.
