11+ vocabulary builder

Verbal reasoning papers quietly test vocabulary breadth: synonyms, antonyms and odd-one-out questions are won or lost on words your child has never met. This sheet builds that vocabulary in ten minutes a day, the way words actually stick.

Monday: meet five new words

  • Write each word, its meaning and one synonym pair
  • Say each word aloud twice (pronunciation helps memory)
  • Star any word that feels completely unfamiliar

Tuesday to Thursday: use them

  • Use two of the words in your own sentences at dinner
  • Quick round: parent says a word, child answers with a synonym
  • Wednesday: re-test last week's starred words

Friday: test and carry over

  • Match each word to its synonym from memory
  • Words known: tick and retire them to the review pile
  • Words missed: star and carry into next week's five
  • Review pile: five retired words re-tested each Friday

Tutor tip: Vocabulary grows by meeting words repeatedly in different moods, not by memorising lists once. Ten minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday, every time.
