Desmos tips for the digital SAT
The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook for the entire digital SAT Math section - and most students barely use it. This one-page cheat sheet lists the moves worth rehearsing until they are automatic, because a well-placed graph turns a two-minute algebra question into a twenty-second one.
Solve by graphing
- Two equations, two lines: type both, tap the intersection point
- Quadratics: read roots straight off the x-axis crossings
- Inequalities: shade check by testing the origin in your head
Fast moves
- Use sliders for unknown constants in transformed functions
- Type a table, paste the points, then a regression line when asked for a line of best fit
- Mean and median: type the list into stat expressions instead of averaging by hand
- Fractions and exponents from the on-screen keypad avoid typing errors
Practise it
- Do Bluebook's practice tests with Desmos, never a handheld
- For each maths session, pick two questions to solve both ways and compare
- Learn 3 keyboard moves per week until graphing takes seconds
Tutor tip: Fluency is the whole game: the calculator is allowed, so leaving it unused is leaving points behind. Tutors drill these moves inside real practice questions every week.
