HSC vs VCE: the decision checklist
Families compare the HSC and the VCE when they move between NSW and Victoria - or when choosing between schools that offer each. This one-page checklist works through the questions that actually decide it, in the order that matters.
Where you will be
- Which state will your child sit Year 12 in? (HSC is NSW, VCE is Victoria)
- Any university target already in mind, and in which state?
- Interstate recognition: both certificates are recognised nationally - check specific course prerequisites
How your child works best
- Steady across the year (VCE's Units 3-4 spread) or peaking for final exams (HSC's concentration)?
- Comfortable with exam-heavy assessment, or stronger in varied tasks?
- Subject availability: compare each system's list against your child's strengths
Before deciding
- Compare subject lists side by side for the same strengths
- Ask both schools for last year's results in your child's subjects
- Remember: both certificates feed every Australian university via ATAR
Tutor tip: Whichever certificate you choose, the winning strategy is identical: steady weekly effort with feedback. That is the part tutoring supplies.
