NAPLAN in 2027

NAPLAN tests students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The 2027 tests run from 10 to 22 March, early in Term 1, so most preparation happens in Term 4 of the year before and the first weeks of the school year.

The tests are taken online, except Year 3 writing, which is on paper. They are tailored: the questions a student sees depend on the path they take through the test. Results are reported against four proficiency levels: exceeding, strong, developing and needs additional support.

What NAPLAN is for

NAPLAN is a check on literacy and numeracy, not a selection test, so the aim is calm familiarity and steady skills rather than cramming. The skills it measures, close reading, clear writing and reasoning with numbers, are the same ones schoolwork and later entrance exams reward.

Looking ahead: Victoria's selective entry high schools

Victoria has four selective entry high schools: Melbourne High School, The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School and Suzanne Cory High School. Students apply in Year 8 for entry to Year 9. For 2027 entry, applications ran from 2 March to 24 April 2026, the exam was sat on Saturday 20 June 2026 and round 1 offers were made on 3 August 2026.

The exam tests reasoning, problem-solving and comprehension, with content that does not go beyond the Year 8 curriculum, so the Year 7 NAPLAN year is a good time to build the underlying skills.
