British vs American curriculum in the UAE
7 min read ยท updated 2026-10-02
In Dubai, 37% of private-school pupils follow the UK curriculum and 14% the American one. The two differ less in quality than in structure: external exams at fixed points versus continuous grades, specialisation at 16 versus breadth to 18.
How the two systems are structured
- โ British: Years 1-13; IGCSEs at the end of Year 11, then usually three or four A-Levels (or the IB Diploma) in Years 12-13, graded by external exams
- โ American: Grades 1-12; a high school diploma built from course grades (GPA), with AP courses and the SAT or ACT for university applications
- โ British students specialise at 16; American students keep a broader spread of subjects to 18
Which suits which universities
UK universities make offers on A-Level or IB grades, and also accept the American route, usually asking for a high school diploma plus a set number of AP exams at high scores. US universities read transcripts and GPA, and many highly selective ones require the SAT or ACT again for 2026-27 applicants. A-Level and IB students can apply to the US too, often with SAT scores.
Questions to decide
The choice usually comes down to a few practical points:
- โ Does your child do better with continuous coursework or with final exams?
- โ Is your child ready to narrow to three subjects at 16?
- โ Which country's universities are most likely?
- โ Where might the family move next?
