Common App essay prompts 2026-27
6 min read ยท updated 2026-10-02
The Common App personal essay is one of up to 650 words (and at least 250) answering one of seven prompts. The prompts are the same as recent years, so the work is choosing the right story, not decoding a new question.
The seven prompts
- โ 1. A background, identity, interest or talent so meaningful the application would be incomplete without it
- โ 2. A challenge, setback or failure, how it affected you and what you learned
- โ 3. A time you questioned or challenged a belief or idea, and the outcome
- โ 4. Something someone did for you that made you happy or thankful in a surprising way, and how that gratitude affected you
- โ 5. An accomplishment, event or realisation that sparked personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others
- โ 6. A topic, idea or concept so engaging you lose track of time, and where you go to learn more
- โ 7. Any topic of your choice
How to choose
Choose the story first and the prompt second. The best essays show how the student thinks and what they value, through a specific moment told in detail. Most good stories fit more than one prompt, and prompt 7 covers anything that does not fit elsewhere.
A good process
- โ Brainstorm ten specific moments, not achievements
- โ Write a rough draft quickly, then cut to the heart of the story
- โ Read it aloud: it should sound like the student
- โ Ask one or two trusted readers, not a committee
