How it is assessed
From May 2027, the Extended Essay (up to 4,000 words) is marked out of 30 on five criteria: framework for the essay (6), knowledge and understanding (6), analysis and line of argument (6), discussion and evaluation (8) and reflection (4). Reflection is assessed on a statement of up to 500 words informed by three reflection sessions with the supervisor.
With TOK, the essay contributes up to 3 Diploma points, and an E grade means no Diploma.
Where marks are lost
Essays that score poorly usually share these problems:
- โ A research question too broad for 4,000 words
- โ Description instead of analysis
- โ Evaluation of sources and methods missing
- โ Weak or generic reflection
- โ Leaving the work until the final deadline
