How to resit GCSE maths without wasting the window
6 min read ยท updated 2026-09-15
A maths resit is won on diagnosis, not hope. Students who 'just do past papers' repeat the same mistakes. Here is a tight plan for November or summer.
Week 1: diagnose, do not revise yet
Sit one recent paper under timed conditions and mark harshly. Tag every lost mark as arithmetic slip, method gap, or topic unknown. That list becomes the scheme of work.
Weeks 2โ6: rebuild the expensive topics
Foundation and Higher both leak marks on algebra basics, fractions, ratio and multi-step worded questions. Drill those before chasing obscure grade-9 topics. Use board-specific papers (AQA, Edexcel, OCR).
Final fortnight: mocks and exam habits
Two full papers, reviewed with a tutor or teacher who can explain method marks. Practise calculator vs non-calculator timing separately. Sleep and routine beat last-night cramming.

If the target is a 4โ5 and Higher papers feel unreachable, Foundation can be the smarter path. Confirm with the college before entries lock.
How many tutoring sessions do resitters need?๏ผ
Often 8โ12 focused sessions across 6โ10 weeks, plus independent paper practice. Intensity beats a vague year of weekly homework help.
