IB Maths AA vs AI

6 min read · updated 2026-10-03

IB maths comes in two courses, each at SL and HL. Analysis and Approaches (AA) is algebraic and proof-based; Applications and Interpretation (AI) focuses on modelling, statistics and technology.

How they compare

  • ✓ AA: algebra, calculus and proof; Paper 1 is calculator-free
  • ✓ AI: statistics, modelling and technology; calculators are central
  • ✓ Both: SL Papers 1 and 2 at 40% each; HL Papers 1 and 2 at 30% each plus a one-hour Paper 3 at 20%; the exploration at 20%
  • ✓ University fit: many maths, physics and engineering courses ask for AA HL; AI suits social sciences, biology and business

How to decide

Check the maths requirements of the courses on the student's list first. If they allow either, choose the course the student will do better in: a 6 in AI often helps more than a 4 in AA.

FAQs
