How to get a 7 in IB Maths AA

8 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

A 7 in Maths AA comes from three things: no weak topic (the papers sample the whole syllabus), fluent calculator-free algebra for Paper 1, and an exploration that scores near the top. At HL, Paper 3's long problem-solving questions are the deciding factor.

How AA is assessed

  • โœ“ SL: Paper 1 (no calculator, 1h 30m, 40%), Paper 2 (calculator, 1h 30m, 40%), the mathematical exploration (20%)
  • โœ“ HL: Paper 1 (no calculator, 2h, 30%), Paper 2 (calculator, 2h, 30%), Paper 3 (calculator, 1h, 20%), the exploration (20%)
  • โœ“ Teaching time: 150 hours at SL, 240 at HL

The topics that carry the most weight

Calculus is the largest topic at both levels (28 of SL's 120 topic hours; 55 of HL's 210), followed by geometry and trigonometry and statistics and probability. Functions and algebra underpin everything, so gaps there cost marks across every paper.

Where marks are lost

Patterns we see in students' mocks every year:

  • โœ“ Paper 1 algebra slips: sign errors, cancelling terms instead of factors, and log and index laws
  • โœ“ Answers left in the wrong form (not exact, wrong number of significant figures, missing units or domain)
  • โœ“ Skipping 'show that' steps, which lose method marks even when the result is right
  • โœ“ Not using the graphing calculator efficiently on Paper 2 (intersections, numerical integration, statistics)
  • โœ“ Running out of time on the long Section B questions, which carry the most marks
  • โœ“ HL Paper 3: not reading the whole question first, so the scaffolding in earlier parts is missed

The exploration (IA)

The exploration is worth 20% and is the most controllable part of the grade. Choose a topic with genuine mathematics at the right level, use it correctly and in depth, and reflect on the method and its limits. A strong exploration gives a cushion of marks before the exams begin.

A 10-week plan to the exams

  • โœ“ Weeks 1-2: list weak topics from mocks; one topic a day with short Paper 1-style questions
  • โœ“ Weeks 3-4: calculus and trigonometry in depth; calculator skills drills for Paper 2
  • โœ“ Weeks 5-6: mixed Section B questions under time; HL: one Paper 3 question every two days
  • โœ“ Weeks 7-8: full timed papers, alternating Paper 1 and Paper 2, marked against the markscheme
  • โœ“ Weeks 9-10: redo every question you lost marks on; final timed papers and rest

How a 7 is decided

The IB sets grade boundaries for each subject after every session, and they are released to schools rather than published openly, so no fixed percentage guarantees a 7. In practice a 7 means near-complete command of the syllabus and very few lost marks on the investigation, so the plan is the same every year: secure the IA early, then make every paper-style question a habit.

FAQs

Is IB Maths AA HL hard to get a 7 in?๏ผ‹

It is one of the more demanding subjects, but it is achievable with steady practice on long questions and Paper 3-style problem solving.

How much is the IA worth in IB Maths AA?๏ผ‹

20% at both SL and HL.

What is IB Maths AA Paper 3?๏ผ‹

An HL-only, 1-hour calculator paper with two extended problem-solving questions, worth 20%.

Which paper is no calculator?๏ผ‹

Paper 1 at both SL and HL.

What are the grade boundaries for a 7?๏ผ‹

They change every session and are released to schools; aim for consistent full-mark answers rather than a fixed percentage.
