What households spend

Singapore households spent an average of S$104.80 a month on private tuition in 2023, up from S$88.40 in 2018, according to the Department of Statistics' Household Expenditure Survey quoted by SmartWealth; families spent an estimated S$1.8 billion in total. SmartWealth estimates that weekly one-to-one tuition in one subject from Primary 1 to O Level costs about S$38,400 at 2026 rates.

How S$38,400 for one subject adds up

SmartWealth's illustration assumes one two-hour session a week, about 40 weeks a year, with a full-time tutor at the middle of each 2026 rate band:

  • โœ“ Primary 1-4: S$42.50 an hour for 4 years, S$13,600
  • โœ“ Primary 5-6 (PSLE): S$47.50 an hour for 2 years, S$7,600
  • โœ“ Secondary 1-2: S$50 an hour for 2 years, S$8,000
  • โœ“ Secondary 3-4 (O Level): S$57.50 an hour for 2 years, S$9,200
  • โœ“ Each extra subject adds a similar amount, so many families save tuition for exam years and weaker subjects

Choosing the tutor type

  • โœ“ Part-time (often university students): good for practice and homework at lower levels
  • โœ“ Full-time tutors: consistent weekly support and exam-paper experience
  • โœ“ Ex or current MOE teachers: the most expensive, worth it for exam years where marking expertise counts
