US vs UK university applications

8 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

Applying to the UK and the US at the same time is common for international students, but the two systems ask for different things. The UK admits you to a course on your academic record; US colleges admit you to the college as a whole person.

The UK: UCAS

  • โœ“ One application for up to five courses (four in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science)
  • โœ“ One personal statement for all five: from 2026 entry, three questions with a 4,000-character total
  • โœ“ One school reference and predicted grades
  • โœ“ Deadlines for 2027 entry: 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses; 13 January 2027 for most other courses
  • โœ“ Offers are usually conditional on your final grades, such as A*AA or 38 IB points

The US: the Common App

  • โœ“ One application sent to many colleges, with a personal essay of 250-650 words
  • โœ“ Most selective colleges add their own supplemental essays
  • โœ“ Rounds: Early Decision (binding) and Early Action (non-binding), usually 1 or 15 November, and Regular Decision, usually early January
  • โœ“ Colleges consider grades across high school, course rigour, activities, essays, recommendations and, where submitted or required, SAT or ACT scores
  • โœ“ Admission is to the college, and students usually choose a major later

The biggest differences

  • โœ“ Focus: UK personal statements are about the subject; US essays are about you
  • โœ“ Choice of course: the UK asks you to choose now; the US lets you explore
  • โœ“ Length of degree: most UK degrees take three years (four in Scotland); US degrees take four
  • โœ“ Cost and aid: US colleges can offer need-based or merit aid; UK fees for international students are set by each university

Applying to both

Start the US essays in the summer before the final year, since early deadlines come in November. Write the UCAS personal statement around the course, not the US essay recycled: the questions are different. Keep a single calendar: 15 October (UCAS early deadline), 1 and 15 November (US early rounds), early January (US Regular Decision) and 13 January (UCAS).
