The Digital SAT
The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes), each in two adaptive modules, scored from 400 to 1600. Students outside the US pay the $68 registration fee plus a $43 international fee.
SAT or ACT, and when to test
The US-UK Fulbright Commission, the official EducationUSA advice service in the UK, says the choice between the SAT and ACT is personal preference, and that test-centre locations may decide which one you take. It suggests registering in the spring, about 18 months before you'd start university.
Some US universities are test-optional and won't hold it against applicants who don't send scores. Check each university's policy before deciding how many sittings to plan.
Fitting the SAT around UK exams
- ✓ Year 12 students often test in March or May, leaving June or the autumn for a retake
- ✓ Avoid dates that clash with mocks and May-June A-Levels or the IB
- ✓ Early-deadline applicants should have a score by November or December of Year 13
- ✓ Register by the College Board deadline for each date; late registration costs extra
