Choosing VCE subjects: a parent's guide

Victorian students choose their VCE subjects at the end of Year 10, and the decision shapes everything: the ATAR aggregate, university prerequisites and the workload rhythm of the next two years. Here is how the subject system works and the mistakes to avoid.
How the VCE is structured
The VCE is made of units: four units per subject, with Units 1-2 usually taken in Year 11 and Units 3-4 (the scored, ATAR-contributing sequence) in Year 12. Most students take 20-24 units across the two years โ five to six subjects per year โ and must complete English or English as an Additional Language Units 3-4, plus enough other sequences to reach the certificate's 16-unit minimum.
Choosing well: prerequisites, scaling and strengths
- โ Prerequisites first: university courses list required VCE Units 3-4 subjects (Methods for many degrees, for example) โ a Year 10 student with a target course should choose around it
- โ Scaling matters, but weakly chosen subjects backfire: scaled-down results in mismatched subjects cost more than scaling gains
- โ English (or EAL) is compulsory and contributes to the ATAR โ treat it as a subject to win, not a formality
- โ VET subjects can count: vocational education and training programs contribute VCE units and some count in the ATAR
The mistakes to avoid
Choosing a subject because a friend is in it; overloading with six heavy scored subjects when five well-chosen ones produce a better aggregate; ignoring Maths Methods prerequisites for university courses; and leaving the switch too late โ Units 1-2 changes are easy, Unit 3-4 changes are expensive. The students who do best chose five subjects they were good at and one they were curious about.

How many VCE subjects should my child take?๏ผ
Most students complete five to six Unit 3-4 sequences across Year 12 (some complete a Year 11 Unit 3-4 sequence early, which adds to the aggregate). Five strong sequences beat six stretched ones - the fifth and sixth subjects still count toward the ATAR aggregate.
Is VCE English compulsory?๏ผ
Yes - an English sequence (English, English Language or Literature) at Units 3-4 is required for the VCE and is included in the primary four for the ATAR. EAL arrangements exist for eligible students.
