What is A-Level Biology?

A-Level Biology is the standard route into medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, nursing and the life sciences. It carries a reputation for volume, and it is true: biology rewards students who revise continuously rather than in bursts, because the content is wide and the exam wording is precise.
What the course covers
Year 1 builds the foundations: biological molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids), cell structure and transport, DNA replication, cell division, enzymes, the immune system, and exchange surfaces like lungs and the gut. Year 2 raises the stakes: respiration and photosynthesis, energy transfers in ecosystems, nervous and hormonal coordination, homeostasis, genetics, populations, evolution and gene technology.
Alongside the papers sit the required practicals, assessed in school and reported separately as the practical endorsement pass. On AQA, the third paper includes the subject's famous 25-mark essay, a synoptic piece that asks students to connect themes across the whole course; other boards test the same synoptic skill through extended questions instead.
How it is examined
Biology mark schemes are exacting: specific terms earn marks, and near-synonyms routinely do not. That is why able students underperform when they write loosely. The examiners want the vocabulary of the specification, applied in structured chains, with calculations (stats tests, magnifications, rates) handled cleanly in the maths questions the boards now include.

Is biology or chemistry harder at A-Level?+
Different demands: chemistry is more mathematical and conceptual early on; biology is wider in content and stricter in wording. Students strong in maths often find chemistry more natural; students with strong memory discipline often do better in biology. For medicine, both are usually needed anyway.
How should revision be spaced for biology?+
Little and often, from September of Year 12, because the content only compounds. Weekly retrieval of earlier topics alongside current teaching, then past papers from spring, is the pattern that works; last-minute biology revision is close to impossible to do well.
