How A-Level Biology is examined

AQA (7402) examines A-Level Biology with three 2-hour papers worth 91, 91 and 78 marks. Paper 3 includes a 25-mark essay on a theme that draws on the whole course, which rewards students who can connect topics as well as recall them. OCR A (H420) uses two 2 hour 15 minute papers and a 1 hour 30 minute unified paper.

Biology is less about difficult ideas than about volume and precision. The content is wide, and mark schemes pay for exact specification vocabulary, so retrieval practice and answer wording matter as much as understanding.

Why good students still get Bs

Most capable students lose their top grade in the same few places:

Practicals, medicine and Cambridge 9700

Required practicals (12 at AQA) are examined on the papers and also count towards the practical endorsement, a separate pass on the certificate. Biology is usually paired with Chemistry for medicine and dentistry applications. Students taking Cambridge International AS & A Level Biology (9700) sit a different structure with practical and planning papers; our tutors teach both routes.

Common questions

My child knows the content but still gets Bs. What is wrong?+

Almost always wording. Biology mark schemes award marks for specific terms and structured chains, and near-synonyms earn nothing. Marking against the scheme and rewriting answers is the fastest grade lift we offer.

How far ahead of exams should we start?+

Continuous support from the start of the year beats exam-season cramming for biology, because the content base is too large to rebuild late. For targeted help, at least a term before mocks.

What is the AQA Biology essay?+

Paper 3 ends with a 25-mark essay on a broad theme. High marks come from linking several areas of the specification accurately, which can be practised with planned outlines for common themes.

How much maths is in A-Level Biology?+

At least 10% of the marks test maths skills such as statistical tests, magnification calculations and rates. These are predictable, so they are some of the easiest marks to secure.

Do you teach Cambridge 9700?+

Yes, including the practical and planning papers. Tell us the papers and exam series your child is entered for.
