What is EQAO?
4 min read · updated 2026-09-06
EQAO (the Education Quality and Accountability Office) runs Ontario's standardized provincial assessments, checking literacy and numeracy at key stages of the school journey.
The assessments
- ✓ Grade 3: primary division reading, writing and mathematics
- ✓ Grade 6: junior division reading, writing and mathematics
- ✓ Grade 9: applied and academic stream mathematics
- ✓ OSSLT (Grade 10): the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, which is a graduation requirement
What your child's results actually mean
EQAO reports achievement on Ontario's four-level scale. Level 3 means your child is meeting the provincial standard - the expectation for that grade - and Level 4 means exceeding it. Level 2 is approaching the standard (worth attention, not alarm) and Level 1 is below it. School-level reports show the percentage of students at or above Level 3, which is the number quoted in the news.
Should you be worried by a Level 2? Treat it as an early signal, not a verdict: EQAO is one snapshot on one day, and its value is honest information about literacy and numeracy while there is still time to act. The productive response is a conversation with the teacher about which specific skills sat below the line, then targeted help on exactly those.
Where tutoring fits
Support targets the assessed skills (applied math problem-solving, reading comprehension, short writing tasks) in the online format the tests use. Families targeting competitive programs often combine EQAO prep with enrichment beyond the provincial standard.
FAQs
What does Level 3 mean on EQAO results?+
Level 3 is the provincial standard - the expectation for that grade. Level 4 exceeds it, Level 2 approaches it and Level 1 falls below. A Level 2 or 1 is a signal to ask the teacher which specific skills need attention, not a reason to panic.
Is the OSSLT a graduation requirement?+
Yes, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test taken in Grade 10 must be passed to graduate, with a literacy course available as an alternative route for students who need it.
Should my child study for EQAO?+
Light familiarisation with the online format plus steady skills practice is the healthy approach; the results are most useful as an early signal of gaps.
