Ontario Grade 12 math: MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U?

Ontario has three Grade 12 university-preparation math courses: Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U). Which ones a student needs depends on the university programs they are aiming for, so the choice should be made in Grade 11.
The three courses
- โ MHF4U Advanced Functions: exponential and logarithmic, trigonometric, polynomial and rational functions, and characteristics of functions. Prerequisite: Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U).
- โ MCV4U Calculus and Vectors: rate of change, derivatives and their applications, and the geometry and algebra of vectors. MHF4U must be taken before or at the same time.
- โ MDM4U Data Management: counting and probability, probability distributions, organizing data, statistical analysis, and a culminating investigation. Prerequisite: MCR3U or MCF3M.
Which programs need which
The curriculum describes MCV4U as the course for students heading to careers in science, engineering, economics and some areas of business, including anyone who will take university calculus, linear algebra or physics. Engineering, mathematics, computer science and physical science programs usually list both MHF4U and MCV4U.
Many business, health science and social science programs ask for MHF4U and accept MDM4U as a further course. Requirements differ between universities and change from year to year, so check each program's admissions page before choosing courses.
Order and timing
Most students take MHF4U in the first semester of Grade 12 and MCV4U in the second. Students who take them together need secure function skills, because calculus uses every function family from MHF4U. MDM4U can be taken in either semester.
In each course, 70% of the final mark comes from work during the semester and 30% from a final evaluation.
