What is Key Stage 4?

Key Stage 4 (KS4) covers Years 10 and 11 in England, ages 14-16: the two GCSE years. Everything before builds toward it, and results from it gate sixth forms, colleges and apprenticeships.
What students study
KS4 students typically study English language, English literature, maths and combined or triple science as core, plus option subjects chosen at the end of Year 9 (humanities, languages, arts, computing, and more). Most take 8-10 GCSEs in total.
Tiers, entries and controlled elements
Maths and science use Foundation or Higher tiers in most boards, decided by the school based on the student's trajectory. Some subjects also have non-exam components (practicals, speaking endorsements). Schools confirm entries by February of Year 11, so tier conversations belong in the autumn, not the spring.
The two-year rhythm
Year 10 is content-heavy: most new material is taught. Year 11 shifts to past papers, mocks (typically November and February/March) and targeted revision. The strongest results come from students who treat Year 10 homework as GCSE-level practice from day one, which is also the pattern where weekly tutoring helps most.
