What to do after a bad mock

A bad mock feels like a verdict. It is actually the most valuable revision resource your child owns: a personalised map of exactly where the marks are leaking. Here is the four-step reset our tutors run after every disappointing mock.
Step 1: separate the result from the identity
The conversation starts with the parent, not the paper: a calm 'mocks are measurements, not judgements' sets the tone. Students who feel judged hide problems; students who feel supported show them, and only shown problems can be fixed.
Step 2: rank the lost marks
Go through the paper together and sort every lost mark into three buckets: content not known, content known but applied badly, and marks lost to time or question-reading. Most papers reveal that a handful of recurring issues (not the whole syllabus) account for most of the loss.
Step 3: rebuild the plan around the buckets
Content gaps get teaching and practice questions. Application errors get worked examples copied and repeated. Timing losses get pacing drills with a visible countdown. Six weeks of this, with a re-test at the end, is the standard reset cycle.
Step 4: change strategy or effort, based on evidence
If the next mock improves, the method works; keep going. If it does not, the issue is usually that revision time is going to comfortable topics instead of hard ones, or that active practice is missing. That is when a one-to-one tutor earns their fee: honest diagnosis plus a plan built around the actual marks.
FAQs
Should we appeal or review the mock result?+
Mocks are internal and usually not appealable; their job is diagnostic. Put the energy into the reset cycle instead.
How much can grades move before the real exams?+
With a focused six-week reset and consistent follow-through, movement of one to two grades is common in subjects where the gaps are specific rather than general.
