How A-level grade boundaries work

A levels are graded A* to E on your total raw mark across every paper and any coursework (NEA). Boards set the boundaries after marking, so they move each year to keep a grade at a similar standard when papers are harder or easier.

The A* boundary is set separately from the A boundary, and the gap between them varies a lot by subject: in 2026 it was 41 marks out of 300 in AQA Maths but 25 out of 260 in AQA Biology.

Key boundaries from June 2026

  • โœ“ Maths: A* at 260/300 (AQA) and 254/300 (Edexcel); A at 219 and 210
  • โœ“ Chemistry: A* at 255/300 (AQA) and 246/300 (Edexcel)
  • โœ“ Biology: A* at 199/260 (AQA), 220/300 (Edexcel Biology A, Salters Nuffield) and 218/300 (Edexcel Biology B)
  • โœ“ Physics: A* from 186 to 191 out of 250 depending on the AQA option, and 239/300 with Edexcel
  • โœ“ Psychology: A* at 229/288 (AQA) and 162/270 (Edexcel)
  • โœ“ Economics: A* at 178/240 (AQA) and 288/335 (Edexcel Economics A)

Using it well

  • โœ“ Enter the total across all papers and the NEA, not one paper's mark
  • โœ“ Choose your option or paper combination where the calculator asks: Further Maths and Physics boundaries differ by option
  • โœ“ Use the percentage option for mocks marked out of a different total
  • โœ“ University offers are made on grades, so the gap to the next boundary is the number to work on
