A-Level tutoring for the grades unis actually ask for

A-Levels are the first exams where effort alone doesn't guarantee marks, technique does. Our tutors are subject specialists who teach exam technique, model answers and how examiners award (and steal) marks.

How A-Levels are assessed

A-Levels in England are linear: students sit their exams at the end of Year 13, usually three papers per subject, and most of the grade comes from those exams. Some subjects add non-exam assessment (NEA), such as the history investigation or English Literature coursework, and the sciences add a practical endorsement that appears on the certificate as a separate pass.

Grades run from A* to E, and for university applications they convert into UCAS tariff points: an A* is worth 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16.

Why Year 12 matters more than it looks

University applications go in during the autumn of Year 13, before a single A-Level exam has been sat. Universities therefore see predicted grades, which schools set largely from Year 12 work and end-of-year exams. Students who drift through Year 12 often apply with predictions that limit their choices.

Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses have a mid-October deadline; most other courses have a January deadline. That timeline is why most families start A-Level tutoring in Year 12 rather than waiting for Year 13 mocks.

A specialist for each subject

Each A-Level needs a tutor who teaches its exact specification. An AQA chemist knows that Paper 3 can test any part of the course; an Edexcel physicist knows that Paper 3 is two and a half hours of mixed and practical questions. Tell us the board and specification code for each subject and we match tutors accordingly, one tutor per subject or one tutor for related subjects such as Maths and Further Maths.

Biology (7402)32h each91, 91, 78
Physics (7408)32h each85, 85, 80

Other boards differ: Pearson Edexcel and OCR science papers run from 1h 30m to 2h 30m. Check each subject's specification code with the school.

Common questions

My child's mocks went badly, is it too late?οΌ‹

No. We rebuild from the mock paper itself: every lost mark becomes a revision priority. Students often jump 1–2 grades in a term of focused work.

Do you help with UCAS predictions?οΌ‹

Indirectly but importantly, better class tests and mocks move predicted grades. We also advise on admissions tests for competitive courses.

When are A-Level exams?οΌ‹

They run from mid-May to late June of Year 13, and results are published in mid-August.

Do you help with NEA coursework?οΌ‹

Yes, within the exam board rules. The work must be your child's own, so tutors teach the skills, help with planning and give the kind of general feedback schools allow, but never write or edit the coursework itself.

How many A-Level subjects can one tutor cover?οΌ‹

One tutor per subject is our standard, because A-Level depth demands specialists. For students taking three subjects, families usually start with the weakest or most exam-critical and add subjects as needed.

When should online A-Level tutoring start?οΌ‹

The first term of Year 12 protects predicted grades when they are cheapest to protect. Exam-focused intensives from spring of Year 13 then convert understanding into past-paper marks.

When should A-Level tutoring start?οΌ‹

The first term is the highest-value window: the jump from GCSE is steep and early grades feed UCAS predictions.
