High school GPA calculator
Add your courses, letter grades and credits to work out your unweighted and weighted GPA. Mark Honors and AP or IB courses to see the weighted figure, and add your GPA so far to get your new cumulative GPA.
Unweighted GPA
4.00
Out of 4.0, every course counted equally by credit.
Weighted GPA
4.00
Honors +0.5, AP / IB / dual enrollment +1.0. 4 credits counted.
Cumulative GPA (optional)
Add your GPA and credits so far to see the new overall (unweighted) GPA.
The grade scale used
This calculator uses the common 4.0 scale. Schools vary slightly, so check your school's handbook if a few hundredths matter.
- ✓ A+ / A = 4.0 (A+ = 4.3 if your school counts it), A- = 3.7
- ✓ B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
- ✓ C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
- ✓ D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0
- ✓ Weighted: Honors +0.5 and AP / IB / dual enrollment +1.0 (no bonus on an F)
Raising your GPA
Because GPA is an average, the courses with the most credits move it most, and early grades become harder to shift each year. The quickest gains come from turning a B+ into an A- in a full-year course and from avoiding a single low grade, which pulls the average down more than one high grade lifts it.
FAQs
How do you calculate GPA?+
Turn each letter grade into points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with plus and minus grades in between), multiply by the course credits, add them up and divide by the total credits.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?+
Unweighted GPA treats every course the same, so the maximum is usually 4.0. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder courses, commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment courses, so it can go above 4.0.
Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?+
Many colleges recalculate GPA in their own way, often removing the weighting and looking at the difficulty of your courses separately. Report the GPA your school lists on your transcript.
Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?+
It depends on the school. Most cap an A+ at 4.0; some give 4.3. Tick the box if your school uses 4.3.
What GPA is good?+
A 3.0 unweighted GPA is a solid B average. Selective colleges often look for 3.7 or higher, alongside a demanding course load.
