How the IB Diploma is scored
Students take three or four subjects at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level, each graded 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E and combine into up to 3 core points, so the maximum is 45. In May 2026 the global average was 30.88.
The passing conditions
A total of 24 is necessary but not enough. The calculator also checks the IB's other conditions: no grade 1, no more than two grade 2s, at least 12 points from HL subjects (the best three count for students taking four), at least 9 from SL (5 for students taking only two), no E in TOK or the Extended Essay, and CAS completed.
Common questions
How is the IB Diploma score calculated?
Six subjects are graded 1 to 7 (42 points), and TOK and the Extended Essay together add up to 3 core points through a matrix, for a maximum of 45.
What is the minimum IB score to pass?
24 points, but every other condition must also be met: no grade 1, no more than two grade 2s, at least 12 HL and 9 SL points, no E in TOK or the Extended Essay, and CAS completed.
How many core points do TOK and the EE give?
Between 0 and 3. Two A grades give 3; an E in either means the Diploma cannot be awarded.
What was the average IB score in 2026?
30.88 points worldwide in the May 2026 session.
