Online IB Diploma tutoring
The Diploma rewards students who can do many things at once: six subjects, the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS, all graded against global criteria. Our tutors coach the subjects (HL maths and sciences especially) and teach the criteria-craft that separates a 38 from a 42.

How the IB Diploma is scored
Diploma students take six subjects, three or four at Higher Level (HL) and the rest at Standard Level (SL), each graded from 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) are graded A to E and together add up to 3 core points, so the maximum score is 45. Creativity, activity, service (CAS) carries no points but must be completed.
In the May 2026 session, 209,607 students in 159 countries received Diploma and Career-related Programme results, and the global average Diploma score was 30.88 points.
What it takes to be awarded the Diploma
Reaching 24 points is necessary but not enough. The IB awards the Diploma only when every one of these conditions is met:
- β At least 24 points in total
- β No grade 1 in any subject, and no more than two grade 2s
- β At least 12 points from HL subjects (the best three count for students taking four)
- β At least 9 points from SL subjects (at least 5 for students taking only two)
- β No grade E in TOK or the Extended Essay
- β CAS completed, every component submitted and no academic misconduct
Internal assessments: marks earned before the exams
Most subjects include an internal assessment (IA), such as the maths exploration or the science investigation. IAs are marked by the school's teachers and moderated by the IB, and in most academic subjects they count for 20-30% of the final grade. Schools set IA, Extended Essay and TOK deadlines across the two years, and they tend to bunch together in the second year.
Tutors teach the method behind each IA: choosing a workable question, meeting each criterion and acting on the teacher's feedback. The work itself must be the student's own, as the IB's rules require, so tutors never write or edit it.
Where Diploma points are lost
Marked papers and IA drafts show the same patterns every year:
- β HL Maths: long problem-solving questions with no scaffolding
- β Science and economics answers that describe when the question asks to explain or evaluate
- β IAs that neglect a criterion, such as personal engagement or evaluation
- β Language A essays without a sustained line of argument
- β TOK essays that summarise knowledge instead of testing claims and counterclaims
The IB Diploma at a glance
| Component | How it is assessed | Points |

| Theory of Knowledge | An essay on one of six prescribed titles, plus an exhibition | Up to 3 core points, with the EE |
| Extended Essay | An independent research essay of up to 4,000 words | Up to 3 core points, with TOK |
| CAS | Creativity, activity and service experiences over at least 18 months | No points, but required |
Maximum 45 points: 42 from the six subjects plus 3 core points. Each subject guide sets its own weighting for the internal assessment.

Common questions
Can tutors help with the Extended Essay ethically?οΌ
Yes: they teach how to frame a research question, structure an argument and use the assessment criteria - the student writes every word. That guidance is exactly what supervisors with 20 students cannot give individually.
Which DP subjects do students struggle with most?οΌ
HL Mathematics AA and HL Physics top the list - both reward early support before the first IA deadlines. English paper technique and TOK essay structure are the other frequent requests.
What is a good IB Diploma score?οΌ
The global average in May 2026 was 30.88 points out of 45. Scores in the high 30s open most selective universities, and the most competitive courses ask for around 40 or more with specific HL grades, so check each course's requirements.
How many points are TOK and the Extended Essay worth?οΌ
Together, up to 3 points, from a matrix that combines the two grades. A grade E in either one means the Diploma cannot be awarded, whatever the total.
When are IB results released?οΌ
Results for the May session come out in early July (6 July in 2026), and results for the November session in early January.
Do you help with IA and EE?οΌ
Subject tutoring includes IA structure and feedback within fair-use bounds. Extended Essay mentoring is available on request.
