How A-Level Chemistry is examined
At AQA (7405) students sit three 2-hour papers: inorganic and physical chemistry (105 marks), organic and physical chemistry (105 marks), and a Paper 3 worth 90 marks that can test any part of the course alongside practical skills. Pearson Edexcel (9CH0) uses two 1 hour 45 minute papers and a 2 hour 30 minute general and practical paper; OCR A (H432) uses two 2 hour 15 minute papers and a 1 hour 30 minute unified paper.
Practical work counts twice: through exam questions on the required practicals (12 at AQA) and through the practical endorsement, which teachers assess during the course and which appears on the certificate as a separate pass.
Why chemistry grades slip
Chemistry rewards fluency and precision. These are the gaps we close first:

Medicine, dentistry and Cambridge 9701
Most UK medicine and dentistry courses require A-Level Chemistry, so the grade carries high stakes for many students. International students taking Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) follow a different structure that includes practical and planning papers; our tutors teach both routes.

Common questions
When should chemistry tutoring start?＋
The first term of Year 12 is the highest-value window, because early mole and bonding gaps compound fast and autumn assessments shape predicted grades. Mid-course rescue is possible, but starting early costs less.
My child memorises mechanisms and still loses marks. Why?＋
Mechanisms learned as isolated reactions collapse on unfamiliar molecules. We teach the small family of patterns underneath, then drill applying them to molecules never seen before, which is exactly what the papers ask.
Is A-Level Chemistry needed for medicine?＋
For most UK medical and dental schools, yes. Check each university's entry requirements, because a few accept other combinations.
What is the practical endorsement?＋
A separate pass grade awarded by your child's teachers for practical work done during the course. It is reported alongside the A*-E grade rather than counting towards it.
