What Units 3 and 4 cover
Unit 3, Equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox reactions, covers the reversibility of reactions, acid-base behaviour and the generation of electricity from electrochemical cells. Unit 4, Organic chemistry and chemical synthesis, covers organic functional groups and the design of synthesis processes.
How it is assessed
School assessment in Year 12 is weighted Science inquiry 20% (practicals and investigations), Extended response 10%, Test 20% and Examination 50%.
The ATAR exam lasts three hours plus 10 minutes' reading: multiple choice (25%, 25 questions), short answer (35%, 8-12 questions) and extended answer (40%, 5-7 scenario-based questions). Calculations make up 15-20% of the exam. In 2026 the exam is on Thursday 29 October.
For written-only ATAR courses, SCSA averages your moderated school mark and your ATAR exam mark to give the combined mark, so school assessments through Year 12 count as much as the final exam.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- ✓ Calculations without working, units or significant figures
- ✓ Equilibrium explanations without reasoning
- ✓ Unbalanced redox equations
- ✓ Organic reaction pathways
- ✓ Extended answers that miss the scenario
