What Units 3 and 4 cover
Unit 3 covers further differentiation and applications, integrals and discrete random variables. Unit 4 covers the logarithmic function, continuous random variables and the normal distribution, and interval estimates for proportions.
How it is assessed
School assessment in Year 12 is weighted Response 40%, Investigation 20% and Examination 40%.
The ATAR exam has a calculator-free section (35%, 5-10 questions, 50 minutes) and a calculator-assumed section (65%, 8-13 questions, 100 minutes), where notes on two A4 sheets and up to three calculators, including CAS, are allowed. In 2026 the exam is on Monday 2 November.
For written-only ATAR courses, SCSA averages your moderated school mark and your ATAR exam mark to give the combined mark, so school assessments through Year 12 count as much as the final exam.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Working missing on questions worth more than two marks
- โ Calculator-free algebra and exact values
- โ CAS output copied without interpretation
- โ Normal distribution questions without clear notation
- โ Notes sheets that are too general to help
