The Calderdale (and Kirklees) 11+
5 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13
In Calderdale, The Crossley Heath School and North Halifax Grammar School run a joint admissions process with one test. You apply to the schools directly for the test, then name them on Calderdale's secondary application.
The test
The test has English, mathematics and creative writing papers. For September 2027 entry, registration ran from Friday 20 March to Friday 26 June 2026, and the test was on Saturday 19 September 2026. Results are uploaded to parents' accounts by mid-October.
Applying
Sitting the test is separate from applying for a place: name the schools on your home council's secondary application between 1 September and 31 October. Each school ranks qualifying children under its own admission criteria.
Kirklees
Heckmondwike Grammar School in neighbouring Kirklees runs its own admissions test and registration. Check its website for dates and format.
Preparing for the Calderdale test
- โ Creative writing is a paper in its own right: practise planned stories and descriptions to time
- โ Keep English reading and comprehension going weekly alongside maths
- โ Register directly with the schools between March and June, then apply through the council in the autumn
For September 2028 entry
Based on the 2026 pattern, expect registration from late March to late June 2027 and the test on a Saturday in mid-September 2027.
