How to get a Band 6 in HSC English

8 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

English is the only compulsory HSC subject, so it counts towards every student's ATAR. A Band 6 in English Advanced needs sophisticated, well-planned essays written to time across two papers. Students sitting the HSC from 2027 study the new English Advanced 11-12 syllabus; the exam is expected to keep a similar two-paper shape, but check NESA's specifications for your year.

The exam (the structure used up to 2026)

  • โœ“ Paper 1, Texts and Human Experiences (1h 30m plus 10 minutes' reading, 40 marks): short answers on unseen texts (20 marks) and an extended response on your prescribed text (20 marks)
  • โœ“ Paper 2 (2 hours plus 5 minutes' reading, 60 marks): one extended response for each of Modules A, B and C, 20 marks each
  • โœ“ Module A: Textual Conversations; Module B: Critical Study of Literature; Module C: The Craft of Writing

What Band 6 responses do

  • โœ“ Answer the question asked, not a prepared essay, with a clear thesis in the first lines
  • โœ“ Use detailed textual evidence and analyse how techniques create meaning
  • โœ“ Show conceptual understanding of the module's ideas, not only plot
  • โœ“ Module C: craft a short piece with deliberate choices and reflect on them precisely
  • โœ“ Unseen texts: link each technique to its effect and to the question's idea

What each module asks of you

  • โœ“ Common Module, Texts and Human Experiences: how texts represent individual and collective human experiences; the unseen texts test this on material you haven't seen
  • โœ“ Module A, Textual Conversations: how two paired texts speak to each other, and how reading one changes your view of the other
  • โœ“ Module B, Critical Study of Literature: close study of one text, its construction and its lasting value, with your own informed judgement
  • โœ“ Module C, The Craft of Writing: your own imaginative, discursive or persuasive writing, using prescribed texts as models, plus reflection on your choices

Timing

Paper 2 allows about 40 minutes per module. Practise to that time from the start of Year 12: Band 6 essays are usually complete, controlled and around the length you can plan and write in 40 minutes, not longer.

A Year 12 plan

  • โœ“ Term 1: build a bank of evidence and analysis for each prescribed text
  • โœ“ Term 2: timed essays for each module with feedback on thesis and analysis
  • โœ“ Term 3 and trials: full papers to time; rewrite the weakest module each week
  • โœ“ Final weeks: unseen-text practice and 40-minute essays on new questions
