How it is assessed
English Advanced is examined in two papers on two days. Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes) covers texts and human experiences with unseen texts and a prescribed text; Paper 2 (2 hours) has a section each on textual conversations, critical study of literature and the craft of writing.
The new English Advanced syllabus (2024) is taught to Year 12 from Term 4 2026 and first examined in 2027. Year 12 students study four prescribed texts, one each from prose fiction, poetry and drama, nonfiction, film or media, including at least one Shakespeare text; Paper 2 keeps the same structure as before.
Scaling and the ATAR
In the 2025 HSC, English Advanced had a mean HSC mark of 41.1 and a mean scaled mark of 32.8 out of 50. The best 2 units of English must be included in every ATAR.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Essays that retell the text instead of arguing
- โ Quotations without analysis of their effect
- โ Unseen text answers without precise technique names
- โ Craft of writing pieces without a clear purpose
- โ Memorised essays that do not answer the question set
