How to get a Band 6 in the HSC

A Band 6 is the top band in an HSC course: an HSC mark of 90 to 100 in a 2-unit course. It reflects performance against the course standards, not a quota, so every student who reaches the standard gets one. Knowing how the mark is built shows where the effort pays.
How the HSC mark is made
Your HSC mark in each course is the average of two parts, weighted equally: your HSC exam mark and your school assessment mark. The school assessment mark is moderated against the exam performance of your school's whole group, so a strong cohort exam result lifts everyone's assessment marks.
Exam marks are aligned to the bands: NESA's markers and judges decide the raw mark that represents the start of each band for that year's paper, so a Band 6 means the same standard whether the paper was hard or easy.
The bands
- โ Band 6: 90-100
- โ Band 5: 80-89
- โ Band 4: 70-79
- โ Band 3: 60-69
- โ Band 2: 50-59
- โ Band 1: 0-49
- โ Extension courses use E4 (45-50) as the top band
Raw, aligned and scaled marks
Raw marks are what you score on the paper. Aligned marks, shown on your HSC results, place that raw mark on the band scale. Scaled marks are different again: UAC scales course marks to calculate the ATAR, which is why a Band 5 in one course can contribute more to an ATAR than a Band 6 in another.
The Band 6 lists
NESA publishes four HSC merit lists each year after results are released, all based on achieving the highest band in a course (Band 6, or E4 in extension courses):
- โ Distinguished Achievers: students with the highest band in one or more courses, the list most people mean by the 'Band 6 list'
- โ All-round Achievers: the highest band in 10 or more units
- โ Top Achievers in Course: one of the highest places in a course, with the highest band
- โ First in Course: first place in a course, with the highest band
A plan for Band 6
- โ Term 4 of Year 11 to Term 1 of Year 12: secure every school assessment task; they are half the mark
- โ Term 2: past HSC questions by topic, marked against NESA's marking guidelines
- โ Term 3 and the trials: full timed papers and feedback on extended responses
- โ Final weeks: the most recent papers and a list of your common errors
