How to revise for GCSE Physics

Physics is the GCSE science students fear most and the one where technique pays fastest: the equations are finite, the question styles repeat, and the marks are the most formulaic of the three sciences. Here is the revision system.

Master the equations first

GCSE Physics is equation-dense, and a surprising share of marks are pure calculation: speed, acceleration, weight, work done, power, charge flow, potential difference. Know which equations your board gives you and which must be memorised, then drill rearranging them: most lost marks are algebra slips, not physics misunderstandings.

Required practicals are examined

Every board examines its required practicals through questions on method, variables, errors and improvements, even though the practicals themselves are done in class. Make a one-page summary of each: apparatus, method, variables, expected results and sources of error. These are reliable marks every single year.

The explanation questions

  • Learn the standard explanations verbatim: how transformers work, why resistance changes with temperature, how seatbelts reduce force in crashes
  • Use precise physics vocabulary (force, energy transferred, potential difference), not everyday language
  • Practise six-mark answers with a structure: state, explain, apply to context, conclude

Past-paper discipline

From spring, one physics paper section weekly under timed conditions, marked against the scheme. Physics mark schemes are strict about units and working: write every step, include units in answers, and never round until the end. The full-mark habit is mechanical, and it is trainable.

FAQs

How many equations do I need to memorise?

It depends on the board: some provide an equation sheet, others expect a set memorised. Check your specification and build a one-page equation list to drill; ours provide this in sessions.

I understand the physics but can't do the maths. What now?

That is a rearrangement and units problem, and it is very fixable: targeted calculation drills (substituting, rearranging, converting prefixes) usually resolve it within weeks.
