How to revise for GCSE English

GCSE English is a different kind of revision from maths or science: you cannot memorise a formula and apply it. But it is equally systematic. Here is what actually moves grades in Language and Literature.
English Language: the technique paper
- โ Paper 1: fiction reading + creative writing. Practise extracting inferences, language analysis and structural analysis
- โ Paper 2: non-fiction reading + viewpoint writing. Practise comparing writers' perspectives and writing letters, articles, speeches
- โ Creative writing: learn a flexible planning structure (opening, build, climax, resolution) and practise adapting it to different prompts
- โ Timing: both papers are 1 hour 45 minutes. Practise writing to time, every time
English Literature: the set texts
Know your texts inside out: plot, characters, themes, context and key quotations. But do not just memorise quotes: learn how to weave them into an argument. The top grades come from a thesis-driven essay that answers the specific question, not from recounting the plot.
The revision method that works
- โ Create a one-page revision sheet per set text: characters, themes, context, 10 key quotes
- โ Write one practice essay per week on a past question, timed
- โ Mark it yourself against the board's criteria, then re-write the weakest paragraph
- โ Practise unseen poetry comparison with a structure learned by heart

Very: Literature Paper 1 and part of Paper 2 are on set texts. Not knowing your texts is the single biggest reason for low Literature grades.
