The HSPT explained
5 min read ยท updated 2026-10-02
The HSPT (High School Placement Test) from Scholastic Testing Service is used by many Catholic high schools for admission, placement and scholarships. It is fast: 298 multiple-choice questions in about two and a half hours.
The five sections
- โ Verbal Skills: 60 questions in 16 minutes
- โ Quantitative Skills: 52 questions in 30 minutes
- โ Reading: 62 questions in 25 minutes
- โ Mathematics: 64 questions in 45 minutes
- โ Language: 60 questions in 25 minutes
Why speed matters
Verbal Skills allows about 16 seconds a question, so recognising question types instantly is as important as knowing the answers. Timed practice by section is the most effective preparation.
How schools use the scores
Schools use HSPT results for admission, for placing students in classes and, at many schools, for academic scholarships. Each diocese and school sets its own test date, usually in the winter of 8th grade, so check with your target schools.
