How the HSPT works
The HSPT from Scholastic Testing Service has five sections and 298 multiple-choice questions in about 2 hours 23 minutes: Verbal Skills (60 questions, 16 minutes), Quantitative Skills (52, 30 minutes), Reading (62, 25 minutes), Mathematics (64, 45 minutes) and Language (60, 25 minutes). Schools and dioceses set their own test dates, usually in the winter of 8th grade.
Where HSPT points are lost
The usual problems:
- โ Verbal Skills pacing: about 16 seconds a question
- โ Number series and comparison questions
- โ Math topics not yet covered at school
- โ Grammar rules applied by ear
- โ Fatigue across a long test
