SSAT scores explained

5 min read · updated 2026-10-02

An SSAT score report has two kinds of number: scaled scores, and percentiles that compare a student with others in the same grade. Schools usually pay most attention to the percentiles.

Scaled scores

At Upper Level, the quantitative, verbal and reading sections are each scored from 500 to 800, for a total of 1500 to 2400. The writing sample and the experimental section are not scored.

Percentiles

The percentile shows how a student performed against other students of the same grade and gender who took the test in recent years. Because SSAT takers are a strong group, a 50th percentile is an average result among competitive applicants, not a weak one.

What counts as a good score?

It depends on the school. Many highly selective schools see applicants mostly in the top quarter of percentiles, but they also weigh grades, essays, interviews and teacher recommendations. Ask each school what range its admitted students usually have.
