IGCSE Core vs Extended
6 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13
Many Cambridge IGCSE subjects are tiered. Core covers the essential content and caps the grade; Extended covers everything in Core plus harder material and opens the top grades. The choice changes which papers a student sits and the highest grade they can earn, so it matters most in Maths and the sciences.
The difference in Maths (0580)
Cambridge's 2025-2027 IGCSE Mathematics syllabus sets out the two routes:
- โ Core: Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator), each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, 50% each
- โ Core candidates are eligible for grades C to G
- โ Extended: Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), each 2 hours and 100 marks, 50% each
- โ Extended candidates are eligible for grades A* to E
- โ Extended content includes all of the Core content, and each route has its own list of formulas
Who each route is for
Cambridge says Core is for learners targeting grades C to G, and Extended for learners targeting A* to C. Students expected to get a D or below should be entered for Core; students expected to get a C or above, for Extended. Any student aiming at A Level or IB Higher Level Maths needs Extended.
The risk on each side
On Core, a strong student can't go above a C, however well they do. On Extended, a student who falls short of the lowest Extended grade gets no grade rather than a low one, so Extended suits students who are secure at C or above. Schools decide each student's entry from class and mock results before the exam entry deadline.
Other subjects
The sciences and several other Cambridge IGCSE subjects are also tiered, each with its own papers. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE uses Foundation and Higher tiers instead. Check the syllabus for your subject and board: the paper numbers and grade ranges differ.
Moving from Core to Extended
- โ Close the gaps in Extended-only topics, such as harder algebra, functions and trigonometry
- โ Practise Paper 2 and Paper 4 past papers: they are longer, at 2 hours and 100 marks each
- โ Aim for secure C-grade performance on Extended papers before the school's entry decision
