How it is assessed
Under the 2027-2029 syllabus for 0510, Component 1 (Reading and Writing, 2 hours, 60 marks) is worth 70% and Component 2 (Listening, about 50 minutes, 40 marks) 30%. Component 3, a 10-15 minute speaking test, is endorsed separately on the certificate with grades 1 to 5.
In 0511 (count-in speaking), the speaking test counts towards the overall grade instead.
Where marks are lost
Marked papers show the same patterns year after year:

- โ Reading answers copied rather than selected
- โ Listening detail missed on first hearing
- โ Short, memorised answers in the speaking test
- โ Spelling and grammar errors under time pressure

What is the difference between 0510 and 0511?๏ผ
In 0510 speaking is endorsed separately; in 0511 the speaking mark counts towards the overall grade.
How long is the speaking test?๏ผ
About 10 to 15 minutes.
ESL or First Language English?๏ผ
ESL suits students still developing fluency; First Language suits fluent writers. Schools decide the entry.
