What is A-Level Physics?

A-Level Physics is the subject engineers, pilots, radiographers and physicists are built from, and the one university admissions teams read as proof a student can handle hard quantitative reasoning. It is demanding, but it is also one of the most teachable subjects, because its questions follow learnable patterns.
What the course covers
The journey starts with mechanics (motion, forces, energy, momentum) and materials, moves through waves, electricity and quantum ideas like photons and photoelectricity, then into the second year's field theory: gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, thermal physics, nuclear physics and radioactivity. Boards round the course off with an option topic, AQA's astrophysics being the most popular choice.
Assessment is three written papers at the end of Year 13, plus the practical endorsement: a set of required practicals (around a dozen depending on the specification) assessed in school across the two years and reported separately as a pass, not graded. The endorsement is required by many science degrees, so the practical write-ups matter even though they carry no exam marks.
The maths demand, honestly
At least 20% of the marks assess maths skills above GCSE level by regulation, and in practice the subject feels more mathematical than that number suggests: rearranging equations, standard form, trigonometry, exponentials and logs are everyday tools. Students taking A-Level maths alongside physics get a natural reinforcement loop; students not taking maths should expect to train the maths explicitly, and this is the single most common reason physics grades sag.

What is the practical endorsement?+
It is a pass/fail record, reported separately from the grade, that your child completed the required practicals competently across the course. It is not inside the exam papers, but universities reading science applications often expect a pass, so the school-run practicals must be taken seriously.
