Online A-Level Physics tutoring
A-Level Physics grades sag for one reason more than any other: the maths underneath the physics. Our tutors teach both together, then train the structured answer patterns and past-paper technique your board's mark schemes actually reward.

How A-Level Physics is examined
AQA (7408) examines A-Level Physics with three 2-hour papers worth 85, 85 and 80 marks; Paper 3 covers practical skills and data analysis plus an option topic such as astrophysics or turning points in physics. Pearson Edexcel (9PH0) uses two 1 hour 45 minute papers worth 90 marks each and a 2 hour 30 minute paper worth 120 marks. OCR A (H556) uses two 2 hour 15 minute papers and a 1 hour 30 minute unified paper.
Physics is the most mathematical of the sciences: at least 40% of the marks test maths skills, from rearranging equations to logarithms and exponential change. That is why maths fluency is taught alongside the physics in every session.
Where physics marks are lost
Marked past papers show the same patterns year after year:
- ✓ Rearranging and substituting into equations under time pressure
- ✓ Units, prefixes and significant figures
- ✓ Explanations that skip the physical reasoning between the steps
- ✓ Required practical questions on uncertainties and graph analysis
- ✓ Synoptic questions that link mechanics, fields and electricity
Physics without A-Level Maths, and Cambridge 9702
A-Level Maths is not a formal requirement for Physics, but students who do not take it need extra support with calculus-style reasoning, logarithms and trigonometry, and we build that into the plan. Students on Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics (9702) have their own tutoring programme with the paper structure and practical papers that route needs.
A-Level Physics papers by exam board
| Board (specification) | Papers | Length | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| AQA (7408) | 3 | 2h each | 85, 85, 80 |
| Pearson Edexcel (9PH0) | 3 | 1h 45m, 1h 45m, 2h 30m | 90, 90, 120 |
| OCR A (H556) | 3 | 2h 15m, 2h 15m, 1h 30m | 100, 100, 70 |
AQA Paper 3 includes an option: astrophysics, medical physics, engineering physics, turning points in physics or electronics.

Common questions
My child does not take A-Level Maths. Can they still cope?+
Yes, with explicit maths training. We front-load the algebra, trigonometry and logarithm skills the physics assumes, then keep a maths warm-up inside every session. It is the most common setup we teach.
Do you help with the practical endorsement?+
The endorsement itself is assessed in school, but the exam papers test the practicals' methods and analysis. We teach the required practicals so the write-ups and the exam questions on them are handled confidently.
Can we start mid-Year 13?+
Yes. We diagnose against your board's past papers, rebuild the two or three weakest topics first, and run a past-paper schedule through to the exams.
How much maths is in A-Level Physics?+
At least 40% of the marks test maths skills. Students who are comfortable with algebra, logarithms and trigonometry gain marks across the whole paper.
What are the AQA Physics option topics?+
Paper 3 includes one option: astrophysics, medical physics, engineering physics, turning points in physics or electronics. Schools choose the option, so check which one your child studies.
Do you teach Cambridge 9702?+
Yes. Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics has its own page and tutors, including support for the practical papers.
