What is the QCE?

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is the senior schooling credential Queensland students earn, typically across Years 11 and 12, with results feeding ATAR university entry.
How students earn it
Students build the QCE by completing enrolled subjects and courses and accumulating the required learning at a passing standard (a 'literal' 20-credit pattern across the senior years). General subjects that can contribute to an ATAR include Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English and more.
QCE and ATAR
Earning the QCE and receiving an ATAR are related but separate: the ATAR comes from senior subject results through Queensland's tertiary admissions centre. Strong weekly performance in General subjects from Year 11 is what builds competitive results.
Queensland's scheduling advantage
Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so senior students keep stable weekly routines year-round, including tutoring slots. Consistency is a quiet advantage over southern states where the clock shifts.
How QCE points and credits work
The QCE is earned by accumulating credits: completed subjects, courses and recognised studies each contribute credits, and reaching the required total (along with literacy and numeracy requirements) earns the certificate. General subjects completed at Units 3-4 contribute the most, and results in those subjects also feed the separate ATAR calculation that universities use for offers.
The practical takeaway for parents: every subject counts twice - once toward the certificate's credit total and once toward the ATAR through subject results. That is why steady performance across all subjects, not just favourites, is the strategy Queensland tutors teach first.
FAQs
What are QCE points used for?+
Credits from completed subjects accumulate toward the QCE certificate itself - students need the required total, plus literacy and numeracy, to be awarded it. The QCE is a completion credential; university entry runs on the separate ATAR, which is calculated from subject results. Strong results therefore serve both at once.
Is the QCE the same as the ATAR?+
No. The QCE is the certificate; the ATAR is the separate university admission rank calculated from eligible senior subject results.
What subjects contribute to an ATAR in Queensland?+
General (and some Applied) senior subjects contribute; students need an eligible pattern of subjects for ATAR eligibility.
